Alex Sensation, the sensation of Hispanic radio in the tri-state area.

Music is undoubtedly one of the greatest passions of Latinos. We live it, we dance to it, and we enjoy it to the fullest. The same goes for America’s DJ from New York City, Alex Sensation, who works for the Hispanic radio station with the largest and best listenership, La Mega 97.9 FM.

This talented Colombian was born in Bogotá, the country’s capital. Alex Sensation (as he is known artistically) emigrated to the United States at a young age. Influenced by his brother, who was also a DJ, Alex began collecting music, and by 16 he was already a disc jockey in various nightclubs. At 17, he started working at the famous Copacabana Nightclub. In order to get the job, he had to tell the club’s management that he was 19. Alex was determined to succeed, and his passion for music knew no bounds.

While working at Copa, Alex was approached by Tony Luna, program director of Amor 93.1 FM. Luna heard Alex and offered him a weekend DJ position, but only as a mixer. Alex took the job and stayed with that station for about a year and a half. Six months later, he landed a job as the main mixer for a segment called “La Mega Mezcla del Mediodía” on La Mega 97.9 FM. Six years later, Alex remains the station’s most popular and successful DJ.

Besides his great mixing skills and talent, what makes Alex Sensation stand out in the radio industry? He’s multicultural, he’s charismatic, and he’s energetic!

Alex reaches a broad audience that includes diverse nationalities. He enjoys mixing different genres, but his roots as a mixer are tied to tropical music. “I grew up listening to Salsa and Cumbia because of my roots. One of the first clubs I played at on weekends was a Dominican club. There, I learned about Dominican culture—Bachata, Merengue, and merengue típico—when I was still very young. I made many Dominican friends and fell in love with their culture. Today, my passion is everything within Caribbean music. I mix everything within that genre, while also knowing what the Anglo market has to offer.” Alex Sensation is truly well-versed in all markets. Alex Sensation loves diversity!

Among his many accomplishments as a prominent DJ and radio personality, Alex has been the face of Dennon Team DJ. Alex also DJs five nights a week across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Long Island, to name just a few. In addition, he has two #1 radio mix shows on the #1 market in the country: “La Original Mega Mezcla” and “La Mega Mezcla Sábado en la Noche,” both on La Mega 97.9 FM. He has also performed to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden, the Izod Center, the Nokia Theatre, and the United Palace, among others.

Alex’s life revolves around music, but his work doesn’t end when he’s not in front of the microphone. He also enjoys spending time with his family and his loyal listeners. Alex is a person who has stayed true to himself and has made sure to give back to the community all the love he has received. Not only is he very involved with the community and various charities, but he also participates every year in the Puerto Rican and Dominican parades, Colombian festivals, where he has been named “Local Godfather,” and the “Peace for Colombia” walk/rally in New York City. Alex is a true advocate for helping those in need, children, and education, and he recently participated in a special fundraiser for the National Latino Commission. He spoke about AIDS with President Dennis de León and helped raise a substantial amount of money for the charity.

This year, Alex received an ACE Award (Association of Entertainment Critics of America). He has also taken his mixing skills and talent to countries such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Canada, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, and Aruba.
